The "Sweet" life

Sweets. Mmmm, yum. What comes to mind right away for you when you think of your favorite sweet treat? I have had a sweet tooth for as long as I can remember, as I’ve gotten older I have definitely figured out how to curb it but golly when you want something sweet you can kind of feel like you’re on a mission. I thought it would be fun to share about some of our favorite local businesses to get sweets when that sweet tooth is on a mission so I asked my family which ones we should include and this is the list we came up with. While I could easily write an entire blog post about each of these fantastic local businesses I’m going to keep it short and “sweet” hehe and share some snippets about the following 6 local businesses: Three Birdies Bakery, Bean & Pie, Fannie’s Ice Pops, Sweet Frostings, Sparkles Bakeshop and The Scoop. I loved how our 2 boys contributed with their cute, little comments and our teenage daughter really helped me create this post which felt very appropriate as she wears the crown in our house as the reigning queen of sweet tooth land. How fun to work on this “sweet” little blog post with my kiddos. We hope you enjoy it.

If you’ve been lucky enough to come across cookies from Three Birdies Bakery then you know but if you haven’t yet let me be the one to tell you these cookies are crazy amazing! Not only are they delicious, they are a sugar cookie that I would describe the flavor and sweetness as a slightly sweet shortbread cookie or butter cookie they are also a work of art. Owner Jamie, often has people tell her that they “are too pretty to eat” to which she smiles and says, “I can always make more.” Jamie commented that she “loves creating little pieces of edible art and I pour my heart into each one.” She wants you to eat them even if in all reality you’ll likely be tempted not to. Jamie doesn’t use stencils for the art on her cookies, it’s all done free hand which is a marvel and almost unbelievable if you’ve seen her cookies. But that’s how she rolls, I have seen her decorate first hand and in person so I know it’s absolutely true. In addition to being a vendor at the Kendall Yards Night Market, Jamie can also customize cookies for you. She’s made everything from local business logos to iconic Spokane landmarks to Harry Potter to adorable woodland creatures. Anyone feel sentimental about pie? Anyone? I know I sure do. I feel like it’s one of those desserts that your Grandma made that while you ate it you felt all kinds of warm fuzzies and happiness, a kind of happiness that only eating pie can provide. If you’d like to enjoy a pie that I swear to you, you can taste the love baked into it, and might even taste like one your Grandma made definitely give Bean and Pie a try. With the dream of having their own brick and mortar, Owners, Katy Bean and her husband Ethan ran a Kickstarter last year that was fully funded in a short amount of time. Bravo Katy and Ethan!! They will be opening their very own Bean and Pie shop in Coeur d’Alene this year, the plan is to open the doors in the Fall. Bean and Pie strongly believes in using quality ingredients and I tell you it shines through in the delicious flavors of their pies. Well now I’m really hungry for pie, can someone please hand me a slice? Until their shop opens Bean and Pie is available at various markets and occasional events around the region, follow their Instagram HERE to find out where.

Fannie’s ice pops are “locally made, farm to freezer goodness on a stick.” These fantastic ice pops are great anytime of year but to me they are a quintessential Summer sweet and one that I always look forward to enjoying. As our 10 year old son commented Fannie’s ice pops are, “Nice to have on a hot Summer’s day.” While every pop that I’ve had is both delicious and refreshing my favorite is the cucumber, apple, mint and lime ice pop. In my opinion it’s a Fannie’s classic. Oh my golly, writing about these pops is making me want one right now. Not in the mood for something fruity but still want to check out Fannie’s, try the chocolate avocado ice pop, it’s just dreamy and creamy. Think fudgesicle but definitely healthier. You can find Fannie’s all around town at various markets Farmers market and in the free standing Fannie’s freezer at some local businesses to find out where follow Fannie’s on Instagram HERE.

Oh my goodness Sweet Frostings is a one stop shop for sweets. Truly. What are you in the mood for? Cupcakes, macarons, cookies, cakes, milkshakes? They have all of those and more, so you’re good and covered. I’m partial to their cupcakes and they rotate through 50+ flavor variations. Isn’t that impressive? Some of the flavors they offer are salted caramel, red velvet, French toast, German chocolate, lemon coconut just to name a handful of the choices. If you’re curious about about something specific you can head to their website where they have each day of the week listed out with the cupcake flavors that are offered that day. Don’t forgot about the happy hour they have for their cupcakes, it’s 1/2 off cupcakes on Saturday and Sunday evenings. Downtown it’s on Saturdays from 5-6pm and at the Whitworth, Northtown mall and Valley mall locations on Sundays from 5-6pm. I absolutely love that the owners are a mother and daughter team. Be sure to check out their Instagram page which by the way will make your mouth water HERE.

The Lulupies from Sparkles were my cookie heroes last year when I was following a very strict no gluten diet. The fact that I could indulge in such a delicious treat while having it also be gluten free filled my heart with such happiness. My entire family has the same favorite cookie, the Ginger Lou lulupie. It’s two ginger molasses cookies with cinnamon buttercream in the middle. Are you kidding me? They are SO flipping good!! Our 10 year old son describes this cookie as, “Christmas exploding in your mouth.” Mic Drop. He’s absolutely right. Sparkles motto is “Until further notice, celebrate everything.” I can tell you with certainty that you definitely feel like you’re celebrating when you’re enjoying a cookie or other sweet treat from Sparkles. You can find Sparkles owner, Renee, and her fabulous cookies at the Kendall Yards Night Market each Wednesday night through September 25th. She also offers customized sweet goodies as well. Be sure to follow Sparkles over on Instagram HERE.

The Scoop is an ice cream shop nestled in an adorable South hill neighborhood. I personally love restaurants, cafes, ice cream, etc. that are found in neighborhoods. How about you? To me they somehow have an extra measure of cozy and personable-ness. That can be a word, right? When I asked our 4 year old what he’d like to say about the Scoop he said “I like your ice cream and I have it in my tummy.” I mean it’s simply put and makes sense for the most part so I think it gets the point across. Haha. About this adorable ice cream shop, our 10 year old son commented, “Delicious, when you see the ice cream it makes your mouth water. My favorite flavor is salted caramel.” The owner of The Scoop, Jennifer is the perfect gal to own a cute and fun ice cream shop as she has one of the cutest giggles you’ll ever hear, a sweet smile and kind heart. I think that visiting the Scoop is on the “must do while in Spokane” list whether you’re passing through or live here. Be sure to follow them on Instagram HERE and give them a visit on one of these hot Summer days, you won’t regret it.
